How are fungal spores produced?
In corms, spore-forming asci are located on the inner surface of the mature fruit body. The spores are released in a cloud when the asci opens. The gill fungus has basidia located on the gill below the cap. The spores fall off the gills at maturity. A mushroom or toadstool is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground, on soil, or on its food source. Toadstool generally denotes one poisonous to humans

How to harvest mushroom spores?
Place a drop of water on top of the cap to help release the spores. Cover with a paper cup or cup and leave for 2 to 24 hours, depending on the moisture and freshness of the mushrooms. The spores will drop onto paper, foil or glass, creating a spore print.
Mushroom gills:
The spores are found on the gill surface. Cut the stalk and place the cap, bearing downward, on a piece of aluminum foil, a piece of white paper, index card, or glass microscope slide. Place a drop of water on top of the cap to help release the spores. Cover with a paper or glass cup and leave for 2 to 24 hours, depending on the moisture content and freshness of the mushrooms. The spores will drop onto paper, foil or glass, creating a spore print. If you only have one sample to study, use only part of the cap.
If you don’t want to separate the cap from the stem, make a hole in a dowel, place the card on a paper cup, and thread the mushroom stem through the hole until the underside of the cap is on the map. ; then proceed as above.
When picking in the field or in the woods, you can take a few sheets of aluminum foil from your collection basket, place the mushroom cap on the aluminum foil, and wrap it with the rest of the mushrooms in aluminum foil. You can print spores when you get home or go to school.
Pore fungus:
If the mushroom has a soft, cool body like a boletus, the spores will be inside the holes under the cap. Spore prints can be made in the same way as for lamellar fungi. Your spore layer will reflect the size and shape of the pore.
If the fungus is hardy, it will be difficult to obtain spore prints from polypores growing on trees or logs. Some polypores take a long time to mature and produce spores. In addition, fungi can often live long after they have produced and released spores. Try wrapping them in paper towels or damp newspaper overnight before placing them on foil, paper, or glass to print the spores. Note that the spore-bearing surface is always facing the ground as the polypore grows.
Mushrooms have other shapes:
There are other forms of mushrooms such as morels, hydnums, corals, puffballs, and bird nests, to name a few. If you find these different types of mushrooms, experiment or consult a fungus book to locate the spores.
To study spores under a microscope:
Scrape some of the spores from your spore print with a needle or scalpel and place the spores on a microscope slide. Place a drop of water on the spores and cover with a coating.
To preserve your spore prints:
Spore prints can be kept on paper or foil by lightly spraying them with an artist spray. Hairspray also works well!
If you love art, why not let the spores “float” on the paper in a pattern created by the air currents in the room? Put the mushroom hat on cardboard or colored paper without covering the hat and see what happens! These surprises make for cute greeting cards, business cards or even cartoon debuts!
